Studio Amphis: 3 things to prepare before your lighting consultation
A lighting consultation might not be the first appointment you think about, but it’s one of the most important in the building process. This is where decisions are made about how your home will function every day.

Lighting shapes more than a room. It influences how your space looks, feels and functions every day. During your Studio Amphis consultation, you'll walk through our interactive studio to discover what works best for your project.
For many homeowners, it can feel unfamiliar. But it’s also one of the most rewarding parts of the journey. Lighting is what brings your home together. It shapes how materials look, how spaces function, and how your home feels from day to night. Your flooring feels warmer. Your material choices shine. Your kitchen feels inviting instead of clinical. It can – and should – be fun.
The difference comes down to preparation.
“A lot of people think they’ll figure it out on the day,” says Amphis’s lighting designer Eddie Buyukbekir. “But the more prepared you are, the easier it is to make confident decisions.”
Whether you’re meeting with Eddie at Studio Amphis or attending an appointment with your builder, here are three things to prepare before your consultation.
1: Make a list of what isn’t working in your current home
One of the easiest ways to prepare is by looking at the home you already live in.
- What feels frustrating?
- What do you wish worked better?
- What spaces feel good to be in?
“If something isn’t working in your current home, bring it up during your consultation,” Eddie shares. “It’s the best way to avoid repeating the same mistakes and improve the way you live.”
Sometimes the biggest insights come from small frustrations, like a kitchen bench that’s too dark for cooking or a bedroom that feels overly bright at night. These are the details that should guide your decisions.

Come prepared with questions, inspiration and ideas. A lighting consultation is designed to help you make confident lighting decisions before construction begins.
2: Think ahead about furniture placement
Lighting decisions are made earlier than most people expect, often before furniture is finalised. This can make it harder to design lighting that works with how the space will actually be used.
From desks to dining tables, furniture placement influences where lighting should sit and how it should function. Without some level of planning, lighting can end up feeling disconnected from the way the home is eventually used.
“You don’t need every detail figured out,” Eddie explains. “But having an idea of furniture placement makes a massive difference.”
Planning ahead helps avoid common issues like reflections on your TV, shadows across benchtops or glare at the dining table.
3: Bring inspiration with you
A little inspiration goes a long way. Create a Pinterest board. Save Instagram posts. Tear pages from magazines. You can even jot down memories of spaces you’ve admired before, like a hotel stay or spa day. These references help shape the emotional feel of your home, not just the technical layout.
“Most people don’t bring inspiration with them,” Eddie says. “When they do, the whole process becomes easier and more collaborative.”
Look for images where the lights are switched on. It’s less about copying a design, and more about understanding of the mood and atmosphere.

Getting the most out of your consultation
A thoughtful lighting plan helps your home feel more considered from day one. Arriving prepared makes it easier to work through decisions and create a plan that suits the way you live.
