The Different Types of Downlights

Downlights are often the default in residential lighting plans. It’s easy to see why – they’re efficient, effective and convenient. But why settle for entry-level when you could light your home like an expert?

Not all downlights are created equal. Transform a space from flat to finessed with the right product selection. From diffused, recessed and gimbal, different downlights offer various effects and functions. Let’s spark your inspiration!

BROAD ILLUMINATION

Fixed

Fixed downlights provide
focused, direct lighting, typically casting light
straight down. Stationary
fixtures are perfect for
illuminating specific areas.

Use them to light task zones
such as kitchen counters or
workbenches.

Diffused

Even illumination can be
created with diffused
downlights, which help reduce harsh shadows.

A basic downlight for functional spaces, like laundries and walk-in pantries.

Recessed

Recessed downlights offer
a clean, unobtrusive light source that provide balanced illumination without glare.

Perfect for general illumination without
visual clutter.

Wide Recessed

Wide recessed downlights cast a broader beam of
light, ideal for covering
larger areas, while minimising harsh glare.

Best for broad areas, such as expansive living rooms.

TARGETED ILLUMINATION

Pinhole

Create a pointed beam
of light towards a specific area with a pinhole fitting. They have a deep-set reflector providing optimal glare control.

Use them to spotlight artwork or architectural features.

Slot

Similar to pinhole fascias, a slotted downlight casts a concentrated beam of light. Whereas pinholes direct light downwards, slots are angled.

Try them in hallways,
lounges or bedrooms to showcase art or décor.

Gimbal

Enjoy flexibility with gimbal downlights, allowing you to adjust the light direction. Use a gimbal to highlight specific areas or objects.

Ideal for spaces like hallways, or where art or furniture may change over time.

Surface Mounted

Choose surface mounted downlights for their sleek designs and architectural forms. Available in fixed or articulating models.

A flexible option, excellent for adding a stylish touch to living spaces or kitchens.

Choosing downlights may seem straightforward, but sticking with a basic grid layout is just one approach. The right downlight is the one that enhances its surroundings – whether it’s for function or a feature.

Remember, sometimes less is more. Consider pairing downlights with wall lamps for a well-rounded, considered look that adds depth and warmth. Using downlights as part of a layered lighting scheme can avoid the pitfalls of over-illumination and create a more balanced, inviting environment. Explore Amphis’s range of downlights here
