Case study: Custom lighting layout brightens Westgarth Residences

Two boutique homes. One shared vision. Westgarth Residences is a dual-occupancy project shaped by natural textures, curved architecture and thoughtful detailing The sibling homes were designed with earthy palettes and to invite calm — from handmade tiles to the soft, sculptural geometry within the interiors.

Amphis was engaged to extend that feeling through light. Led by lighting designer Eddie Buyukbekir, the goal was simple: ensure the lighting was intentional and harmonious with each residence.

Client Vision

With vision and mood boards crafted by interior designer Rachel Collard, Eddie joined the project armed with a clear understanding of the homes’ direction.

“By the time I came in, we already knew the ‘look, the furniture placement and the way people would move through the home,” Eddie shares. “That gave us the perfect foundation to design a lighting layout that worked with the architectural plans and the material palette.”

The desired atmosphere was moody and relaxed, complementing the design and flow of each space. Light was carefully placed where it was needed  never intrusive  shining from fittings that are perfectly at home within the aesthetic

The vision was clear:

  • Use sculptural lighting to echo the homes’ organic architecture
  • Draw attention to the natural materials
  • Lift the eye upward to enhance the feeling of spaciousness
  • Create warmth without clutter

Amphis’s Approach

To achieve the right balance of function and mood, Eddie built a layered scheme using ambient, task and accent lighting. Every light in the home has a purpose, “We were very intentional about placing lights only where they were needed — never where they weren’t, explains Eddie.

Every decorative fixture was selected for its shape, materiality or sense of softness, reinforcing the homes’ aesthetic. “None of the decorative pieces are square – they’re organic and curved, working seamlessly with the homes,” Eddie adds.

One of the key challenges was the dual-occupancy structure, with one of the residences receiving very little natural light in certain areas. “We relied on indirect light to soften those darker zones,” says Eddie. Across the project, the aim was to create lighting that feels as natural as possible — enhancing wellness, comfort and the experience of living in each home.

Standout Features

Kitchen

One standout moment is a pair of Olindias wall lamps, positioned to bring mood and softness into the kitchen —  a space that’s typically all function.

“Why should lounges have all the fun?” says Eddie. Rachel loved that Olindias adds an artistic feature at any time of day  they don’t even need to be on.”

Dining

Above the dining table, a pair of sculptural pendants are staggered to add flair and create a gentle ripple of light beyond their shades, creating intimacy without overpowering the space.

Bathroom

Burton Balls sit either side of the mirror —  ready to offer a soft, soothing glow at the end of the day. Pinlights on the bathroom walls wash the tiles with gentle shafts of illumination, enhancing the earthy textures.

Hall

The long hallway of one residence demanded a creative approach. “The home is quite deep, so we broke up the visual journey using different layers of light,” Eddie notes. “We didn’t want a straight line of downlights creating an airport runway. Bellucci uplights were used to reflect warm light off the ceiling, expanding height and contributing to the earthy, calming feel.”

These standout features come together to form a custom lighting scheme that feels intimate, warm, and deeply connected to the design intent.
